Salt Technique for Organic Textures

Discover how to create beautiful crystalline patterns and organic textures using salt.

Overview

Salt attracts moisture from wet dye, creating starbursts and veining effects that feel natural and unpredictable.

Materials

  • Pre-stretched silk
  • Silk dyes
  • Kosher salt and fine table salt
  • Soft brushes and water cup
  • Paper towels

Steps

1

Prepare a Wet Color Field

Lay down an even dye wash. The surface should be damp, not puddled.

Too much liquid dissolves the effect; too little prevents crystal bloom.

2

Apply Salt at Different Grain Sizes

Sprinkle coarse salt for bold bursts and fine salt for delicate texture.

3

Let It Dry Undisturbed

Leave the silk flat until fully dry so the salt can pull pigment evenly.

4

Remove Residue and Evaluate

Gently brush off salt. Add another transparent layer if you want deeper contrast.
