Alcohol Technique for Watercolor Effects

Create stunning fluid, watercolor-like effects using alcohol on wet silk dye.

Overview

Alcohol displaces wet dye and pushes pigment outward, creating halos, blooms, and energetic movement.

Materials

  • Dyed wet silk section
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70%+)
  • Droppers or small spray bottle
  • Round brush for controlled drops
  • Protective gloves

Steps

1

Build a Wet Dye Surface

Paint a medium-saturated area with one or two colors before adding alcohol.

2

Drop Alcohol Strategically

Use droppers for circular blooms or a mist for softer diffusion.

3

Observe and Pause

Let reactions settle before adding more. Overworking can flatten contrast.

Start small. Alcohol effects expand quickly on silk.

4

Layer for Depth

After dry-down, repeat with selective drops to create multi-depth texture.
